Local benchmarks for SKA HI 21-cm surveys
نویسنده
چکیده
One of the obvious tasks for the Square Kilometer Array is to perform deep neutral hydrogen 21-cm emission line surveys out to large redshifts. For the planning of these surveys, and for the interpretation of the results, it is important to have solid z = 0 benchmarks. This paper summarizes some of the results of local extragalactic 21-cm surveys and their implications on the interpretation of the evolution of the Universe’s cold gas supply.

Conference Summary: HI Science in the Next Decade
The atomic hydrogen (HI) 21 cm line measures the gas content within and around galaxies, traces the dark matter potential and probes volumes and objects that other surveys do not. Over the next decade, 21 cm line science will exploit new technologies, especially focal plane and aperture arrays, and will see the deployment of Epoch of Reionization/Dark Age detection experiments and Square Kilome...

HI 21 cm absorption spectroscopy provides an excellent probe of the neutral gas content of absorbing galaxies, yielding information on their kinematics, mass, physical size and ISM conditions. The high sensitivity, unrivaled frequency coverage and RFI suppression techniques of the SKA will enable it to use HI absorption to study the ISM of high column density intervening systems along thousands...
متن کاملHI Surveys with FAST and ASKAP
Surveys of galaxies in the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen are important parts of the science case for the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) and the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). The FAST strawman design with 19 beams and low system temperature allows a “survey speed” comparable to that of ASKAP. The combination of the two telescopes will allow a shallow all-sky survey ...
متن کاملxNTD and the Path towards the SKA
The CSIRO-led eXtended New Technology Demonstrator (xNTD) will test key SKA technologies whilst delivering exciting science outcomes in the fields of HI surveys, gaseous evolution, galactic magnetism, pulsars and transients. The xNTD and its sister telescope, the MIT-led Low Frequency Demonstrator (LFD), build on technologies developed by the Sydney University SKA Molonglo Prototype (SKAMP) and...
متن کاملForecasts for Dark Energy Measurements with Future HI Surveys
We use two independent methods to forecast the dark energy measurements achievable by combining future galaxy redshift surveys based on the radio HI emission line with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from the Planck satellite. In the first method we focus on the ‘standard ruler’ provided by the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) length scale. In the second method we utilize additional inf...
